GARKUWA EDUCATION HALL OF FAME

General Olusegun Obasanjo

The Catalyst for Universal Access

“An international statesman, reformer, and a relentless driver of educational access. Across two eras of leadership, General Olusegun Obasanjo consistently placed basic education at the center of national security and development. In 1976, as Military Head of State, he launched the first nationwide Universal Primary Education (UPE) scheme, opening school gates for millions. Decades later, as civilian President, he institutionalized this commitment by signing the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act into law, making free, compulsory basic education a legal right for every Nigerian child, backed by federal funding. For his monumental legislative and executive actions that democratized access to the classroom, General Olusegun Obasanjo is honorably inducted into the Education Hall of Fame.”
